I’ll be talking about peer education. I’ll define it, talk about it a little here and a little there. Are you ready? Let’s begin.
Peer Education Definition
Peer education refers to a type of promotion to our health. Where members of our community are all supported in promoting change, which enhances our health among our peers. Peer education is the sharing and the teaching of health information, behavior, and values, which are all used in the education of several other people that could share various social backgrounds or experiences through life.
Instead of using health care professionals that educate public members, the general idea here is that people, you know by themselves, help other ordinary people, and they all have better health behaviors.
It would be best if you thought about things like this, imagine you are in a class, and a lecturer explains something to you a million times. It is harder to understand. But if that same thing is taught to you by a fellow student. For instance, your friend in your class that is smart would realize this thing way faster. That is how peer education works too.
What are the areas of application for peer education?
Peer education is now prevalent. Especially when it comes to preventing things like HIV, it has remained one of the main ways many people know and understand how HIV is spread from one person to the next. In various developing countries, peer education is used to help many people, especially those that are going to understand sex, help people know the dangers of having unprotected sex, and help other people who use intravenous drugs.
Peer education has also been correlated with various efforts to prevent alcohol, tobacco, and other drug usages,s which affects young people. There are diverse peer educators who could all serve as role models for adolescents by promoting healthy behaviors. These all help in reinforcing and creating social norms, which all safe support behaviors. These also serve as approachable and accessible health education resources both outside and inside the classroom.
Peer education could be used to promote eating, which is healthy, protection of food, and physical activities among marginalized populations. Peer education has been extensively used in medical education.
Several public schools have made use of programs that utilize peer education. Like the schools in New York have all implemented peer-led sex education methods since the year 1974.
My thoughts on Peer Education
How do you think I knew that sex could be spread through the exchange of bodily fluids from someone positive to another who is positive. I learned this because I had a conversation with someone who knew all about HIV and the person was my age. This helped me understand and do a lot more research to know all I needed to. And to know the risks involved for times, I would want to have unprotected sex and all of that. I also learnt about how people get aids through needles and from pregnant women to their kids.
