Steve was part of the opening cohort of Teach First in 2003. He then spent 12 years working in London academies, including two senior leadership roles. The highlight of this was a 7-year spell at Burlington Danes Academy in west London. The transformation of Burlington Danes was documented in ‘Headstrong: 11 Lessons of School Leadership’ a book that Steve wrote with Dame Sally Coates and Michael Ribton. His current role involves working with school leaders across the south of England. Steve is particularly interested in how to support schools in our most challenging communities, and in bridging the gap between the success we’ve seen in urban schools and the lower standards that persist in some of our more isolated regions. If there’s a theme in Steve’s blogs, it’s sustainable school improvement based on strong fundamentals such as leadership, curriculum and culture.
This session is inspired by the line from Joel Klein’s ‘Lessons of Hope’: our aim was not a great school system, but a system of great schools . We will explore how schools can learn from each other deeply and meaningfully, beyond the shallow mimicry that sometimes passes for collaboration.
