Having grown up as a ‘free school meals kid,’ I am fully aware of the challenges faced by students for whom finding a spare ‘fiver’ to go on a trip is just not possible. It is this background that inspires and motivates me to make a positive impact on the students in my school who are from disadvantaged backgrounds: enabling them and their families to realise their aspirations through individual support and care.
I am Assistant Principal at the Wellington Academy with responsibility for Pupil Premium and transition. I certainly don’t have all the answers and have plenty of mistakes to share. However, I strongly believe that through sharing ideas, working together and encouraging one another, we will achieve the impossible: eradicating the attainment gap between those who are disadvantaged and those who are not.
Closing the attainment gap has to remain a number one priority for schools. Despite some improvements the statistics for disadvantaged students remain too bleak. This session will explore how through engaging with families and treating each student as an individual this can be achieved.
